Our renowned movement experts, Coach Al Lyman and Dr. Kurt Strecker, have launched Pursuit of Excellence, a first-of-its-kind program for gymnasts at RISE Gymnastics in East Greenwich, RI. RISE is the only facility in the country making professional movement and gait analysis available to developing gymnasts.
Kurt and Coach Al have been working with RISE’s Junior Olympian David Jessen, and the gym’s forward-thinking coaches quickly saw how the movement, strength, and stability training David is doing will benefit all their athletes. David credits his work with Pursuit with helping him stick his landings, and better engage his body for explosive power. “Coach Al and Dr. Strecker helped me to identify where I was weak, which contributed to missed landings. I feel more stable thanks to their conditioning routines, and the results speak for themselves!”
On site at RISE last week, Al and Kurt provided movement assessments and evaluated the risk of injury for gymnasts ranging in ages from 8-17. Each gymnast is screened in the areas of posture, muscular balance, and core strength and stability. The athletes are then given a series of exercises to begin the process of building a sound foundational structure that can handle the rigors of training. The program is ongoing, and the athletes will be reevaluated, and progressed through this supplemental training at regular intervals.
“By taking these corrective steps now,” said Dr. Strecker, “the kids who present with the highest likelihood of being hurt can lessen that risk dramatically. Down time away from the sport due injury can be greatly mitigated.”
Said Coach Al, “Assessing these athletes today is again proof positive that no matter what the sport, solid, strong and stable movement patterns are at the foundation of athletic excellence. What this children can do is utterly remarkable–but stay tuned. As they develop true and lasting functional strength and stability, you will really see these kids soar. Just look at what has happened to our young friend David Jessen.”
